San Diego Summer Choral Festival
August 2–4, 2018
Dr. Patrick Walders, Founder & Artistic Director
The San Diego Summer Choral Festival is a three day and evening workshop, which includes rehearsals and sectionals on festival repertoire (performed in concert on Saturday night), vocal master classes, group and private* voice lessons, and topical sessions given by faculty, such as “How to Be a Better Sight Reader”, “Vocal Yoga”, and “Developing Artistry in Singers During Rehearsal”. The festival sessions are led by nationally and internationally known voice instructors and performers. Each day concludes with concerts by accomplished musicians in San Diego and around the country: the Festival Faculty Showcase and Ensemble-in-Residence, the San Diego Pro Arte Voices. The festival concludes with a concert by the Festival Chorus, performing the repertoire studied over the course of the event.
The artistic vision of the summer choral festival is to perform repertoire in different time periods, languages, and styles; works from the classical canon, gospel, and jazz, to unknown gems and contemporary compositions. The fifth anniversary festival featured a world premiere by Shawn Kirchner, for soprano, choir, and piano. A small group, Schola, is formed for more advanced choral musicians, and auditioned on the first day based on sight-reading ability and vocal training.
The San Diego Summer Choral Festival is open to all levels of vocal ability and experience. Students (rising 10th graders through college), church musicians, amateurs, semi-professionals, and professionals, are welcome.
*private voice lessons for an extra cost.
